My motivation is simple, I hate bullies and I hate Putin and everything he and his crony’s stand for. The invasion and its horrible consequences have motivated me to do anything I can to provide direct aid for Ukraine. In my two previous trips to Ukraine in June 2022 (with my son Jack) and in September 2022 (with Brian and Jonathan) the team was providing shelter and accommodation for orphans, many of them displaced by the war. During those trips I have been inspired by the determination of the Ukrainian people to fight for their freedom. This project is different. As the delivery of military aid from the West has been too slow, we have decided to provide direct aid to the Ukrainian Army in the hope that equipment we provide (transport, reconnaissance drones, night vision systems) will enable some of the fathers/sons/grandfathers/brothers we help, to survive this war, and return to rebuild Ukraine.

I am excited to take this trip as I strongly oppose Russia’s attack on the Ukraine and I am willing to proactively do something to support Ukraine. On a humanitarian level I am also excited and willing to physically work on the Children’s Program. This experience will be good to allow me to feed back the reality in Ukraine on the ground to my work and personal circles when I return to Ireland.
This is my second trip to Ukraine since the start of the war. The invasion of Ukraine is the first time war has come to the doorstep of the EU. For this reason it is more relevant than other conflicts. I have met many wonderful Ukrainians refugees in Ireland. The refugees have reached safety but these only represent a tiny percentage of those affected. There are many vulnerable Ukrainians who have not got the possibility to leave Ukraine, those that want to stay in their homes despite the risks and those that are fighting to defeat the opposition. If we can help in a very small way to contribute to helping Ukrainians on the ground then we should do this.
