Returning to Ukraine

First of all, thank you all for your valuable donations to DIRECTAIDFORUKRAINE.ORG, an effort to provide direct support to the people of Ukraine in their time of need.  Together we have raised almost half a million dollars since our last trip in January and this money will go a very long way in Ukraine.

Today is a big day. We are flying back out to Ukraine, to deliver on the variety of projects that we are funding with your help.  Due to security restrictions amid the ongoing targeting by Russian forces of both the Ukrainian military and civilians, we will not be sharing any specifics about locations or timing other than that the team will be in Ukraine from Sept 29th to Oct 5th and will post updates in a daily blog. Additionally, Sam Selis has kindly volunteered his time as a videographer and film editor, and with his talent we hope to bring you a compelling record of the power of your donations.

From our previous four projects in Ukraine, we have built deep relationships with the small communities we are helping, and we have seen their greatest needs firsthand.  Our goal on this trip is to maximize the impact of your donations on those greatest needs which include the following projects:

Humanitarian Support (helping Ukrainian society recover from the damage of Putin’s War)

For those who contributed through the GER3 charity in the US, 100% of your donations are going to these Humanitarian projects:

  1. Rehabilitation Clinic in Zakarpattia Oblast:  Although delayed due to lack of manpower and electrical blackouts, the rebuilding of the clinic is now well advanced.  We ordered all of the rehabilitation equipment and most has already been delivered to the site.  We are excited to attend the opening of the clinic during our visit.  With this investment, the clinic will be able to treat 40-50 wounded/amputee soldiers & civilians per day allowing them to recover in safety, close to the EU border and to their families, rather than in Lviv and Kyiv where these facilities are targeted by Russian missiles.  The faster they can recover the sooner they can provide for their families and contribute to rebuilding Ukraine.

  2. Reconstruction of a Children’s Center:  This will serve a small community in Zakarpattia Oblast and provide an employment opportunity for several women as well as allowing many mothers who were forced to stay at home to care for their kids the opportunity to find work. This helps them provide for their families and eases the massive manpower shortages affecting the Ukrainian economy.

  3. Vehicle Support: We already delivered two vehicles. One large van to a Humanitarian center to enable them to deliver food and clothing donations to internally displaced refugees and a second minibus to an orphanage for mentally challenged boys so that they can be taken for medical care and other therapy.

  4. Hospital Aid: We will be delivering Humanitarian aid to a Children’s hospital, which is accepting more patients as a result of the devastating missile attack on the Children’s Cancer Hospital in Kyiv in July.

Military Support (Assist the Ukraine rebuild by helping the soldiers of this region survive the war)

Given the security situation we will share much more about these projects after the fact but at a high level we are delivering support through three separate projects to help the Ukrainian soldiers from this region survive the war:

  1. Establish a drone pilot school, where experienced front line drone pilots who have been too injured to return to the front lines will be sharing their experience with new recruits to help them survive the battlefield.

  2. Provide a local unit with several hundred drones to defend themselves from Russian attacks.

  3. Provide a Company of troops (140 men) from this area with the following:

    • Four refurbished pickups

    • Four starlinks

    • Warm winter uniforms for 140 men

We want to thank you again for supporting this cause and for trusting this team with your donations.  We are committed that 100% of your contributions go directly to those who need our support, and we look forward to sharing our journey and the video of our experiences in the blog.
